Surviving The Saturn Return
I write about how to survive the pre-30 freakout in the June 2016 issue of ELLE UK magazine, out now.
‘Turning 30 can be frightening as it’s a ‘now or never’ moment’ But Saturn’s Return is about shrugging off external authority and choosing your own inner authority’ – The Saturn Sisters.
The story came about because of my own – might I say mammoth – freak-out in the run-up to 30 (my birthday is in August so I gave myself plenty of time for an extended crisis).
I first heard about the ideas of the Saturn Return while recording a podcast for ELLE, about an astrological story I had written for the mag. The legendary astrologer Shelley Von Strunkel joined us and mentioned my Saturn Return as having something to do with the, erm, eventful year I had travelling in India and Nepal.
A quick Google flung up plenty of terrifying articles about the evil planet Saturn and his wicked lessons for all us immature twenty-somethings. But the more I learned about Saturn, the more I came to love the father-like task master who really just wants us to come up with a practical plan to achieve our dreams.
After a long and tough period of reflection and self-examination, when absolutely every area of my life has come under the microscope – from friendships and romance, to work and where I live – I’m feeling far calmer and (dare I say it?) ready to face my thirties with greater maturity.
